Aperture ring

All SLR lenses used to have an aperture ring. Canon has done away with aperture rings altogether, although you will find new lenses from various manufacturers that have them for some lens mounts.

Nikon still offers elements of old (aperture ring) and new-school (computer chip) technology in its D-series lenses. Figure 2-4 shows the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED I’ve used for many photos throughout this book. It’s a relatively low-cost super telephoto lens that performs quite well. It also has an aperture ring. To use D-series lenses on new camera bodies, lock the aperture ring on the lens to its highest f-number (smallest aperture), and control the aperture from the camera. Ignore the aperture ring in this configuration. When using an old, manual focus lens on a modern dSLR, set the aperture on the lens.
